Placement testing is required of all students enrolling in a program or taking English and math classes unless you meet exemption criteria established by the admissions office. If you are not sure which test(s) you need to take, check with the admissions office or your DSLCC Academic Advisor.
Prepare for the Virginia Placement Test
We strongly recommend that you review and prepare before taking the placement test.
Students taking the VPT Math placement test should review high school level Algebra I and II, algebraic applications and equations, decimals, and fractions.
Students preparing to take the VPT English test should review writing mechanics including organization; focus, development, and support; vocabulary; sentence structure; and mechanics. In addition, students should practice reading comprehension skills.
Student may be exempt if they satisfactorily meet the following:
- High School GPA and appropriate Math and English courses
- ACT or SAT Scores
- GED Scores

SAT & ACT Tests
Students who have taken the SAT or ACT tests within the last two years and have obtained scores that meet or exceed those listed in the table below may request an exemption from the placement test.
