Book Rentals, Renewals, and Policies
The loan period for books is four (4) weeks, with renewals allowed if books are not on hold. Library materials, with the exception of in-library use only items, may be placed on hold, and you will be notified when the material is available.
Restricted Circulation: Reserve books, reference books, periodicals, and special collections items may only be used in the Library.
Renew Your Rental: You may renew items any time during library hours or by telephone unless a hold is placed on the item.
The general book collection is located in the stacks area at the back of the library. New, popular-reading books are displayed in the Reading Lounge at the front of the library.
If you need a book or journal article that is not available through the DSLCC Library, you may request these items through Interlibrary Loan (ILL). We will request the item you need from another library that owns it. Items will be shipped to the DSLCC Library, where you can pick them up and return them. Materials generally arrive within a week after the request is submitted.
Please fill out the Interlibrary Loan form or stop by the library to request an item.
Overdue book borrowers are notified by mail: The Library DOES NOT charge fines for overdue books. Books that are thirty days or more overdue are considered lost and notices are turned over to the Business Office for collection.
Lost books should be reported promptly. The replacement cost of the books must be paid.
Reference Books, Periodicals and Special Collections
Reference collection includes encyclopedias, dictionaries, atlases, handbooks, and specialized indexes covering all subjects.
Periodical Collection: Current issues of magazines and newspapers are in the Reading Lounge but are not available to be checked out.
Online periodical databases and other resources are available through VIVA, a consortium of academic libraries in Virginia to which DSLCC belongs. VIVA provides almost 200 databases, many of which have full-text articles available, and approximately 800,000 electronic resources for the academic community. Registered students and staff can also access the materials off-campus via this link.
Special Collections materials are available to all library users and contain archival material and books relating to Virginia history. Special Collection materials are for in-library use only.
Student computers with high speed Internet access are available to use free-of-charge and are located throughout the Library and in the Library’s computer lab. There are also three computers available for community patrons.
Collection Development: Books and AV materials may only be purchased upon faculty request to align with academic programs.
Printing: DSLCC utilizes a campus print system called WEPA, Wireless Everywhere Print Anywhere. WEPA offers the ability to load/send documents from any location (i.e. home computers, laptops, libraries) and print documents at any WEPA Printing Kiosk on campus. You can also print documents directly from their USB at any WEPA station. The WEPA kiosks can be found in the Library, Warren Hall, and at the Rockbridge Regional Center. Printing costs are:
- $0.09 for one-sided black & white; $0.17 for double-sided black & white
- $0.35 for one-sided color prints; $0.68 for double-sided color prints
WEPA print cards are available for purchase in the library (cash only) and in the bookstore (cash, credit/debit, financial aid).
**Please note that there is an additional charge of $0.40 per page if you use a credit/debit card at the WEPA print station.
