Financial Aid Programs

Federal Pell Grant

The Federal Pell Grant award indicated on your financial aid award notification letter is the amount based upon your expected family contribution (EFC) number. Enrollment status of 12 credits or more will result in the full-time award. Enrollment status of 9 to 12 credits results in a ¾ time award, 6 to 8 credits results in a ½ time award, and 1 to 5 credits results in a ¼ time award. Pell Grant awards are available in the summer semester (following the fall and spring semesters) only to eligible students who did not receive their full schedule award because they attended part-time or did not attend one semester during the 2009-2010 academic year.

 

Federal SEOG Grant

The Federal SEOG award indicated on your financial aid award notification letter is the amount based upon your expected family contribution (EFC) as indicated on your Student Aid Report (SAR).  Award will be prorated to correspond to enrollment levels of full time, ¾ time, ½ time, and less than ½ time enrollment. There is no award for enrollment less than half time, 1 to 5 credits.

 

Federal CSAP Grant

The Federal CSAP award indicated on your financial aid award notification letter is the amount based upon your expected family contribution (EFC) as indicated on your Student Aid Report (SAR).  Award will be prorated to correspond to enrollment levels of full-time, ¾ time. There is no award for enrollment less than half time, 1 to 5 credits.

 

Virginia Student Financial Assistance Program/Commonwealth Award (VSFAP/COMA)

The VSFAP/COMA Grant indicated on your financial aid award notification letter is the amount based upon your remaining level of need after all other resources are applied. Awards will be prorated to correspond to enrollment levels of full-time and ½-time enrollment. There is no award for enrollment less than half time, 1 to 5 credits. 

 

Virginia Student Financial Assistance Program/Virginia Guarantee Assistance Program (VSFAP/VGAP)

The VSFAP/VGAP grant indicated on your financial aid award notification letter is the amount based on your  remaining level of need after all other resources are applied, your academic standing, and your anticipated full time enrollment status. There is no award for less than full time enrollment. In order to maintain eligibility for VGAP students must keep a 2.0 GPA and complete the minimum number of hours required for full time standing in each academic period.

 

Part-Time Tuition Assistance Program (PTAP)

The PTAP grant indicated on your financial aid award notification letter is an amount based on your actual enrollment level. PTAP awards are given to eligible Virginia residents who are taking 1-6 credits. The award amount is based on the number of credits taken and is equal to the tuition and fees for those credits.

 

Federal Work-Study (FWS)

Students who have been awarded a Work-Study position will be notified informing them of their respective positions, reporting time, and payroll information. W-4 and VA-4 Withholding Tax Forms and Employment Eligibility Verification Form (Form I-9) must be completed before beginning work.

 

Direct Stafford Loan Program

Students who do not qualify for sufficient grant aid to cover college costs may apply for a Direct Stafford loan. Keep in mind that loans must be repaid with accrued interest. It is advisable to keep borrowing at a minimum. Eligibility for loans requires a student to be in good standing and that they meet the standards of Satisfactory Academic Progress.

Special Notes:

Direct Stafford Loan recipients must be actively enrolled and participating in at least 6 credit hours at the time of disbursement in order to be eligible to receive loan funds. If you are awarded financial aid and decide not to attend any or all classes you had previously registered for, you must officially drop your classes prior to the start of the semester.
