Purpose

The certificate program in Corrections is designed to prepare individuals for a career in law enforcement and related occupations.

Supported by general education, students develop professional competence in the areas of law enforcement administration, police science, the prevention and control of juvenile delinquency, criminal investigation and in-depth drug awareness. The program is primarily for entry-level law enforcement students but the experienced officer may receive advanced placement.

Students who provide documentation of graduation from accredited law enforcement and correctional academies may be eligible for advanced placement according to the guidelines established by the Virginia Community College System (VCCS) articulation agreements with the Virginia State Police and other accredited Department of Criminal Justice Services academies.
