Wide Variety of Computer Courses Scheduled

Dabney S. Lancaster Community College is offering a variety of non-credit computer courses this fall, for beginners and more advanced students in two locations: the DSLCC main campus in Clifton Forge and the Rockbridge Regional Center (RRC) in Buena Vista.

Classes on the main campus will be held on Tuesday evenings in Room 504, McCarthy Hall. Classes at the RRC will be held on Wednesday evenings in Room 907. The instructor is Ed Mays. Accompanying textbooks may be purchased in the DSLCC bookstore or ordered by calling (540) 862-4322. Students should also bring a flash drive to class.

“Windows 10 Workshop” is a one-session class, to be held from 6:00 to 8:00 pm on the main campus Tuesday, September 12, and again at the RRC on Wednesday, September 13. Students will work with tile apps as well as desktop applications, create files and folders, and learn to use other functions that will enable them to make the most of Microsoft’s newest operating system. The tuition fee is $35; no textbook is required.

“Computers for the Absolute Beginner,” is a three-session course and will be held from 6:00 to 8:30 pm  on the main campus on Tuesdays, September 19 & 26 and October 3, and at the RRC on Wednesdays, September 20 & 27 and October 4. This class is for anyone who has never turned on a computer or is intimidated by them. Tuition is $65, and the textbook is “Welcome to the World of Computers, 5th ed.”

“Introduction to Computers I” is a three-session course and will be held from 6:00 to 8:30 pm on the main campus on Tuesdays, October 10, 17 and 24, and at the RRC on Wednesdays, October 11, 18 and 25. This is a continuation of the beginner course. Tuition is $65, and the textbook is “Microsoft Office 2013.”

Excel Workshop” is a one-night class scheduled from 6:00 to 9:00 pm on the main campus on Tuesday, October 31, and at the RRC on Wednesday, November 1. This is a workshop to prepare students to begin using spreadsheet software. Tuition is $55, and no book is required.

“Introduction to Computers II” is a three-session course and will held from 6:00 to 8:30 pm on the main campus on Tuesdays, November 7, 14 and 28, and at the RRC on Wednesdays, November 8, 15 and 22. This class includes an overview of Excel and PowerPoint, and is a continuation of Intro to Computers I. Tuition is $65; the same book is used for Intro I and II.

“Excel 2013, Level 1” will be held from 6:00 to 9:00 pm on the main campus on Tuesdays, November 28, December 5 and 12, and at the RRC on Wednesdays, November 29, December 6 and 13. Students will learn to design worksheets, work with formulas and functions, and create charts. Students should have prior computer knowledge as well as basic knowledge of Excel, be familiar with working with spreadsheets, or have completed the Intro to Computers II course. The textbook is “Excel 2013, Level 1” and the tuition fee is $85.
