Frequently Asked Questions
Why should I apply for a DSLCC Educational Foundation Scholarship?
Any student currently enrolled in a curriculum at DSLCC or who has applied to DSLCC is encouraged to apply for a DSLCC Educational Foundation Scholarship. You need only fill out one standard scholarship application form to be eligible for up to 40 scholarships! If you complete your scholarship application packet by the deadline, you will automatically be considered for all scholarships for which you meet the eligibility requirements.
Do I need to complete a FAFSA in order to apply for a DSLCC Educational Foundation Scholarship?
Although it is not a condition for all DSLCC Educational Foundation scholarship awards, all students, regardless of income or academic performance, are encouraged to fill out a FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid) at the following link: www.fafsa.ed.gov/
Am I still eligible for a DSLCC Educational Foundation scholarship even if I don't qualify for financial aid?
Absolutely! We believe in rewarding hard work and academic excellence; therefore, most Foundation scholarships are merit based. Specific qualifications or requirements may vary.
Is there a GPA requirement for an Educational Foundation Scholarship?
The average GPA requirement for a Foundation Scholarship is 2.75; however, some scholarships accept a lower GPA, while others require a higher GPA
Where can I find a DSLCC Educational Foundation Scholarship Application?
Applications may be downloaded, completed, printed, and mailed to:
Dabney S. Lancaster Community College Educational Foundation
1000 Dabney Drive
Clifton Forge, VA 24422
Or hand delivered to the Educational Foundation Office in Room 154, Backels Hall, Main Campus.
Please remember that DSLCC Educational Foundation scholarships are handled separately from financial aid and private scholarships. If you are applying for a DSLCC Educational Foundation scholarship, your application materials should be submitted to the Educational Foundation Office. Submitting DLSCC Educational Foundation application materials to the college's Financial Aid Office could cause your application to be delayed or lost.
When is the deadline to apply for a DSLCC Educational Foundation Scholarship?
APRIL 15, 2015 – For all graduating high school and home schooled seniors
JUNE 3, 2015 – For ALL OTHER DSLCC students (Continuing, Non-traditional, and Nursing students; nursing students must have been formally accepted into the DSLCC nursing program by the scholarship deadline.)
Applications submitted after the deadline will not be considered.
How are recipients selected and notified?
Recipients for the various awards are chosen by the DSLCC Educational Foundation Scholarship Committee based upon previous course study, GPA, standardized test scores, recommendations, and essay(s). Recipients will be notified whether or not they receive an award no later than two weeks following the respective deadline. Students who do not receive scholarships also will be notified. Students who apply for, but do not receive, a DSLCC Educational Foundation scholarship still may be eligible for assistance from federal or state sources. Please contact the campus Financial Aid Office for more information regarding this type of help.
If I receive a DSLCC Educational Foundation Scholarship, how will the funds be used and disbursed?
Scholarship funds may be used only for tuition and/or books for courses taken at DSLCC during the academic year for which the scholarship is awarded and/or as indicated on the Scholarship Acceptance Contract signed by the scholarship recipients. The foundation will pay only for books purchased through the DSLCC bookstore by the end of the second week of classes. Any funds not used by a recipient during an award period will be returned to the individual scholarship account to be used by future recipients.
Scholarship awards will be applied to a student’s account balance directly through the Business Office; one half of the award is applied to the fall semester and the remaining balance is applied to the spring semester. Please note that the Educational Foundation does not write checks to students.
What do I need to do to maintain my scholarship award?
If you awarded a scholarship, the requirements are outlined in your Scholarship Acceptance Contract. Requirements vary by scholarship.
