Financial Aid Programs

The following grants and programs are available to DSLCC students. Be sure to complete the FAFSA prior to inquiring about these programs, and contact the Financial Aid office if you have any questions about any of the following.

Federal Pell Grant

The Federal Pell Grant award indicated on your financial aid award notification letter is the amount based upon your expected family contribution (EFC) number. Enrollment status of 12 credits or more will result in the full-time award. Enrollment status of 9 to 11 credits results in a ¾ time award, 6 to 8 credits results in a ½ time award, and 1 to 5 credits results in a less than ½ time award. Pell Grant awards are available in the summer semester (following the fall and spring semesters) to students who did not receive the full Pell Grant award because they were less than full time or did not attend both semesters during the applicable academic year.

Year-Round Pell Grant

Eligible students can now use Federal Pell Grants to help pay for their summer semester and finish their degrees faster than they would otherwise. With the implementation of Year-Round Pell, students who attend full-time for the fall and spring semesters will still be eligible for the Pell Grant award instead of borrowing student loans or taking the summer off. Year-Round Pell allows students to receive up to 150 percent of a regular grant award over the course of the academic year so that they can continue taking classes in the summer. In order to qualify for Year-Round Pell, the student must be enrolled in at least 6 credit hours.

Federal SEOG Grant

The Federal SEOG award indicated on your financial aid award notification letter is the amount based upon your expected family contribution (EFC) as indicated on your Student Aid Report (SAR). Students need to be in at least 6 credits to qualify for the grant. There is no award for enrollment less than half time, (1 to 5 credits).

Virginia Student Financial Assistance Program/Commonwealth Award (VSFAP/COMA)

The VSFAP/COMA Grant indicated on your financial aid award notification letter is the amount based upon your remaining level of need after all other resources are applied. Students may not receive a Commonwealth Award, when combined with other tuition/fee-only assistance (e.g. tuition waiver, tuition scholarship, VA Benefits, or employer tuition reimbursement), which exceeds the student’s charges for tuition/fees. The fees portion of the “tuition/fee” figure includes the basic required fees included in tuition, not additional course fees. Therefore, if a student is awarded Commonwealth Award and then receives another tuition/fee-only award, the Commonwealth Award will be cancelled or prorated accordingly. There is no award for enrollment less than half time, (1 to 5 credits).

Virginia Student Financial Assistance Program/Virginia Guaranteed Assistance Program (VSFAP/VGAP)

The VSFAP/VGAP grant indicated on your financial aid award notification letter is the amount based on your remaining level of need after all other resources are applied. VGAP eligibility is based on Virginia residency, academic standing as seen on your high school transcript, and your anticipated full-time enrollment status in an approved degree or certificate program. Click here for more detailed information about the VGAP award criteria. You may receive a VGAP award for a second year if you meet the renewal criteria.:

  • Maintain full-time enrollment in an eligible program
  • Maintain domiciliary residency in Virginia
  • Maintain a grade point average of at least 2.0
  • Maintain satisfactory academic progress
  • Have advance class levels upon completion of first full year (12 months) of enrollment (30 credit hours)
  • Continue to demonstrate financial need as determined by the FAFSA

Students may not receive the VGAP award, when combined with other tuition/fee-only assistance (e.g. tuition waiver, tuition scholarship, VA Benefits, or employer tuition reimbursement), which exceeds the student’s charges for tuition/fees and the standard book allowance in the financial aid Cost of Attendance. The fees portion of the “tuition/fee” figure includes the basic required fees included in tuition, not additional course fees. Therefore, if a student is awarded VGAP and then receives another tuition/fee-only award, the VGAP Award will be cancelled or prorated accordingly. Students can receive the VGAP grant for up to 2 years (4 semesters) at DSLCC.

Part-Time Tuition Assistance Program (PTAP)

The PTAP grant indicated on your financial aid award notification letter is an amount based on your actual enrollment level. PTAP awards are given to eligible Virginia residents who are taking 1-8 credits. The award amount is based on the number of credits taken and is equal to the tuition and fees for those credits.

Federal Work-Study (FWS)

Students who have been awarded a Work-Study position will be notified informing them of their respective positions, reporting time, and payroll information. W-4 and VA-4 Withholding Tax Forms and Employment Eligibility Verification Form (Form I-9) must be completed before beginning work.

Direct Stafford Loan Program

Students who do not qualify for sufficient grant aid to cover college costs may apply for a Direct Stafford loan. Keep in mind that loans must be repaid with accrued interest. It is advisable to keep borrowing at a minimum. Eligibility for loans requires a student to be in good standing and that they meet the standards of Satisfactory Academic Progress.

Special Notes:Direct Stafford Loan recipients must be actively enrolled and participating in at least 6 credit hours at the time of disbursement in order to be eligible to receive loan funds. If you are awarded financial aid and decide not to attend any or all classes you had previously registered for, you must officially drop your classes prior to the start of the semester.

VCCS Supplemental Grant

The VCCS Supplemental Grant is a Virginia Community College System grant offered to students who are Virginia state residents who have remaining need and are registered in at least 1 credit. The grant will pay tuition and fees and is awarded until funds are exhausted.
