Practical Nursing Certificate

Accreditation

The Practical Nursing (PN) program is approved by the Virginia State Board of Nursing.

Purpose

The three semester program leading to a Practical Nursing Certificate is designed to prepare students to deliver safe and competent nursing care to patients with usual or expected outcomes. Practical nurses work under the supervision of practitioners with higher degrees in acute and non-acute care settings.

After successful completion of Level I, students will be eligible to take the National Council Licensure Examination for Practical Nursing (LPN). Students may also choose to continue into Level II of the program and earn an Associate in Applied Science Degree and be eligible to take the National Council Licensing Examination for Registered Nursing (RN). IMPORTANT: DENIAL OF LICENSE

The program begins each year in August and is completed in the following August. Admission to the PN program is based on completion of the requirements.

ADMISSION TO THE COLLEGE DOES NOT
MEAN ADMISSION TO THE PN PROGRAM

After completion of the PN program, students may enter the Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN) program. For more information about this program, see the ADN program.
