General Information and Regulations
TO RENEW BOOKS:
Renewals are permitted any time during library hours or via telephone. It is not necessary to return the books to renew them. Renewals are not available for reserve materials.SERVICES: Library staff members are on duty at the CIRCULATION DESK and INFORMATION DESK to help library users with resources and equipment.
General book collection is located the stacks area. New books are displayed in the Reading Lounge and the Circulation area and are ready for borrowing.
Reference collection includes encyclopedias, dictionaries, atlases, handbooks, and specialized indexes covering all subjects.
Periodical Collection: Current issues of popular magazines and newspapers are in the Reading Lounge.
Online periodical databases and other resources are available throught VIVA, a consortium of academic libraries in VIrginia to which DSLCC belongs. VIVA provides almost 200 databases, many of which have full-text articles available, and approximately 800,000 electronic resources for the academic community. Registered students and staff can also access the materials form off-campus; consult the hyperlink "ACCESS FROM OFF-CAMPUS" on the library web page.
Special Collections materials are available to all library users and contain archival material and books relating to Virginia history. Most books are available for borrowing.
Copy service for library books, periodicals, or personal papers is available at the Business Office in Backels Hall.
Computers with high speed Internet access are available free-of-charge and are located throughout the Library and in the Library’s Computer Lab. WIreless Internet connection is available in the Library and patrons are encouraged to bring their personal laptops. Audio-visual materials (video cassettes, films, etc.) are indexed by title or subject in the online catalog, and are also available in a separate catalog on the Library web page. A book catalog of audio-visual materials is available to non-profit organizations. Sound-proof booths containing audio-visual equipment are located near the INFORMATION DESK at the front of the Library.
Reserve books are placed on restricted circulation by faculty for class use. Request them at the Circulation Desk.
Interlibrary loan from other Virginia libraries is available for books and magazine articles not available in the area. Usually the materials are received in less than a week.
SERVICES TO FACULTY:
Catalogs: All books and audio-visual materials recently purchased are indexed in the Library's on-line public access catalog, which is also available on the VCCNet TPX menu for full-time faculty and staff and Internet through the Library WWW sites page. The entire collection of A-V materials is indexed in The A-V Catalog, an annually revised listing in book form and also on the web page. Instructions are available on the Library web site to establish a connection for off-campus access for faculty, staff and students. The Commonwealth sponsored VIVA, an electronic library, provides over 200 databases, 10,000 full-text journals and 12,000 full-text monographs to faculty, staff and students via the remote access opportunity.
Circulation of Books: Faculty members may check out books for two weeks, renewable for the same period if not requested by another borrower.
Circulation of A-V Materials: Materials may be checked out at the Circulation Desk, or requested for booking in a campus classroom by telephoning. Courier service provides A-V materials to the Rockbridge area via the Rockbridge Regional Center.
Circulation of Journals: Professional journals will be sent to faculty requesting placement on the routing list.
Reserve Books: Forms are available at the Circulation Desk for listing materials to be placed on restricted circulation or electronic reserve for your students. One-week advance notice will insure availability of material.
Purchase of Books: Books recommended by faculty as suitable for the library collection will be purchased contingent on fund availability. The Library can order personal copies of books for college staff at the Library's discount, but usually not so great as commercial vendors, e.g. Amazon.
Purchase of A-V Materials: All A-V materials, whether funded through the A-V budget, departmental budget, or grants, are ordered and inventoried by the Library and housed behind the Circulation Desk. Current catalogs of published material are available for use in selecting materials for purchase, rental, or free-loan. Moreover, applicable catalogs and brochures are routed to faculty.
Preview of A-V Materials: Facilities for viewing materials before classroom use, or for evaluating before purchase, are provided in the viewing booths in the library. All preview-for-purchase requests must originate with the Library.
New Acquisitions: A list of new Library acquisitions is found on the Library web site. New books, ready for circulation, are displayed in the Reading Lounge.
Professional Literature : The Library contains an excellent book collection in the field of education with emphasis on the two-year college. Subscriptions to two ERIC indexes, Resources in Education and Current Index to Journals in Education, are carried in electronic format and have full-text downloading capabilities.
Interlibrary Loan: Books or copies of journal articles not available in this library can be obtained through mail or FAX from other libraries. This service is available to any library user, and usually takes less than a week.
Bibliographies: The Library staff will prepare bibliographies to your specifications.
Instruction in Library Use: Each entering student is given a general introduction to the use of the Library and its resources by means of a taped tour and worksheet. One-hour training sessions on Internet use are also offered on an optional basis. More specific instruction by a staff member, on traditional library resources or electronic resources on the Internet, either in the classroom or the Library, is available on request. Like other Virginia community colleges, the Library is actively engaged in the Commonwealth’s Information Literacy program.
REGULATIONS:
Borrower's cards are issued to library clients as they borrow materials for the first time. The card must be presented to borrow any materials. There is a charge to replace lost or damaged borrower's cards.
Loan period for books is two weeks, with renewals permitted if books are not in demand. All books are due at the end of each semester. Audio-visual materials may be borrowed by non-profit organizations for a restricted loan period. Library materials, with the exception of reserve items, checked out by another borrower may be placed on HOLD; the requestor will be notified when the material is available.
Restricted circulation. Reserve books, reference books, and periodicals are usually used only in the library, except that some reserve books may be checked out for specific periods of time.
Overdue book borrowers are notified by mail. The Library DOES NOT charge fines for overdue books. Books that are thirty days or more overdue are considered lost and notices are turned over to the Business Office for collection. State law requires that students are not allowed to register for classes until all obligations are satisfied. Unpaid fees may be routed to a collection agency or the Commonwealth for a lien against tax refunds.
Lost books should be reported promptly. The replacement cost of the books must be paid.

Reflecting the diversity of the educational, public and community service goals of the institution, the Library perceives its particular mission to include the following:
To select and acquire as much of recorded knowledge as is consistent with the current and anticipated needs of its users.
To design and produce learning materials for its users as is consistent with the limitation of available resources and manpower.
To assist users in mastering the tools of the Library, and to provide access to needed information located elsewhere. To collaborate with VCCS institution to promote standards of Information Literacy as a core competency as defined by The State Council of Higher Education for Virginia.
To process and organize the materials acquired according to recognized professional standards.
To make the collection available to users while at the same time guaranteeing availability of materials to future users.
To cooperate with other organizations for the advancement of scholarship and the effective utilization of resources.
To provide a facility and atmosphere conducive to a variety of individual and small group study needs.
