CDL-A Comprehensive Course: $1,600 tuition

Four CDL-A courses  are planned for the spring, summer and fall 2013 semesters. Classroom sessions will be held from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., Room 502, McCarthy Hall, on the DSLCC main campus in Clifton Forge on the following dates:

  • January class: Saturdays, January 19 & 26
  • April class: Saturdays, April 20 & 27
  • July class: Saturdays, July 20 & 27
  • October class: Saturdays, October 19 & 26

Students will then to go to the DMV to take the written test and obtain their instructional permit. After obtaining an instructional permit and a Department of Transportation (DOT) physical, students will arrange for a total of 12 hours of behind-the-wheel training (including two hours of pre-trip inspection instruction) with any of our four instructors (see below.) An instructor will accompany the student to the DMV to have the driving test administered. Please note: If the instructor determines that the student is not ready to take the driving test, the student may purchase additional behind-the-wheel training.

CDL-B to CDL-A Course: $1,050 tuition

This course is for students who have already obtained a CDL-A instructional permit or wish to upgrade from a CDL-B to CDL-A license, and also have obtained a Department of Transportation physical. Students must attend one Saturday classroom session where the pre-trip inspection part of the test will be covered (please call (540) 863-2863 or (540) 863-2919 to determine which day to attend). Following the classroom session, students will then be eligible for 12 hours of behind-the-wheel training (including two hours of pre-trip inspection instruction) with any of our four instructors (see below). An instructor will accompany the student to the DMV to have the driving test administered. Please note: If the instructor determines that the student is not ready to take the driving test, the student may purchase additional behind-the-wheel training.

There are no pre-requisites, but students should have good reading comprehension and writing skills. All tests are conducted in English.

This is a non-credit course, so there is no college credit associated with it and financial aid is not available through the College. However, there is some tuition assistance available be through the “On Ramp” program. Call Joyce Broughman at (540) 863-2923 for more information. To register for the CDL course call the DSLCC Non-Credit Coordinator at (540) 863-2863. Tuition assistance is also available through Goodwill Industries. Call (540) 962-0893 for more information.

*The tuition does not cover the cost of the Department of Transportation physical, which must be obtained before any behind-the-wheel training can begin, or the cost of purchasing the CDL-A license. Students are welcome to go to their family physician for the DOT physical.
