Frequently Asked Questions

What types of scholarships are available to DSLCC students?

DSLCC Educational Foundation scholarships are funded by individuals, corporations, and community groups and are awarded by the DSLCC Educational Foundation Scholarship Committee on a competitive basis.

Privately funded scholarships are those awarded through sources outside DSLCC.  Examples of these scholarships include those offered by companies like Wal-Mart, Burger King, Coca Cola, etc.  These types of scholarship have specific applications, eligibility requirements, and deadlines.  The DSLCC Educational Foundation does not coordinate private scholarships and all information contained on this page refers only to DSLCC Educational Foundation Scholarships.

Although it is not a condition for all DSLCC Educational Foundation scholarship awards, all students, regardless of income or academic performance, are encouraged to fill out a FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid).  http://www.fafsa.ed.gov/

Why should I apply for a DSLCC  Educational Foundation Scholarship?

Any student currently enrolled or planning to enroll in a curriculum at DSLCC who has a minimum 2.75 GPA is encourage to apply for a DSLCC Educational Foundation Scholarship. For most scholarships, you need only fill out one DSLCC EF standard scholarship application form.* If you complete your scholarship application packet by the deadline, you will automatically be considered for all scholarships for which you meet the eligibility requirements.  *Please see the full list of available scholarships for those that require a separate application, as well as for additional scholarship criteria information.

Am I still eligible for a DSLCC Educational Foundation scholarship even if I don't qualify for financial aid?

Absolutely! We believe in rewarding hard work and academic excellence; therefore, most DLSCC EF scholarships are merit based.  While most are open to everyone in the DSLCC service area, others were created to reward exceptional academic performance or to provide support for students enrolled/enrolling in a specific program, living in a particular region of the service area, or who demonstrate particular need.

How do I know for which DSLCC Educational Foundation Scholarships I should apply?

What are the conditions regarding the use of DSLCC Educational Foundation awards?

Scholarship funds may be used only for tuition and/or books for courses taken at DSLCC during the academic year for which the scholarship is awarded and/or as indicated on the Scholarship Acceptance Contract signed by the scholarship recipients. The foundation will pay only for books purchased through the DSLCC bookstore. Any funds not used by a recipient during an award period will be returned to the individual scholarship account to be used by future recipients.

How are recipients selected and notified?

Recipients for the various awards are chosen by the DSLCC Educational Foundation Scholarship Committee based upon previous course study, GPA, standardized test scores, recommendations, and essay(s).  Recipients will be notified whether or not they receive an award no later than two weeks following the respective deadline. Students who do not receive scholarships also will be notified.  Students who apply for, but do not receive, a DSLCC Educational Foundation scholarship still may be eligible for assistance from federal or state sources.  Please contact the campus Financial Aid Office for more information regarding this type of help.

If I receive a DSLCC Educational Foundation Scholarship, how will the funds be disbursed?

All award information is given to the DLSCC Financial Aid and Businesses Offices, and all awards will be indicated in the students' individual accounts.  One half the award is allotted for the fall semester and one half for the spring semester. Scholarship awards will be applied to the student's account balance. The Educational Foundation does not write checks to students. Books purchased with scholarship funds must be purchased from the DSLCC bookstore by the end of the second week of classes.
