Educational Foundation

Scholarships applicants must have maintained a satisfactory grade point average (GPA)  in order to be considered for an award.  Minimum GPA requirements vary and, in most cases, are set by the donor. Unless noted below, the scholarship requires a 2.75 minimum GPA.

Alleghany Highlands Chamber of Commerce Scholarship--Established by the Chamber in 2004 to assist with tuition expenses for a graduating senior from Alleghany or Covington High School who resides in the Alleghany Highlands and has made DSLCC their college of choice. Alleghany Regional Hospital Nursing Scholarship--Established by Alleghany Regional Hospital, this scholarship is awarded to a second-year DSLCC nursing student who is a resident of Alleghany County or the City of Covington. The recipient must agree to accept employment at ARH, if offered upon graduation, and to remain employed for at least one year at ARH following graduation from the DSLCC Nursing program. 3.5 GPA Required (application) (2009-2010 Recipient) (back to list)

Betty Andrews Memorial Nursing Scholarship--Established by the late Arch Bennett in memory of his dear friend who demonstrated a dedication to and love for others all her life, this scholarship is awarded to a first or second-year nursing student. (application) (2009-2010 Recipient) (back to list)

Dorothy Ayers Memorial Nursing Scholarship--Established by her husband and children to honor Mrs. Ayer's memory and her love of learning, this scholarship is awarded to a first or second-year DSLCC nursing student. Tim Backels Scholarship--Established in 1981 by Dr. & Mrs. John Backels in memory of their son, Tim, a graduate of the former Clifton Forge High School, this scholarship is awarded to a graduating senior from Alleghany High School who is enrolled in the College Preparatory curriculum, has an AHS varsity athletic letter, demonstrates leadership skills, and is involved in school and community affairs. (application) (2009-2010 Recipient) (back to list)

Bank of Botetourt Art By The James Scholarship--Established in 2004 to assist deserving students from James River, Lord Botetourt, Northside, Parry McCluer, or Rockbridge County High Schools, this scholarship is awarded to a graduating senior who is pursuing a degree in Business or Fine Arts. Bridging the Gap--College to the Community Internship Scholarship---Established by a gift from Judy Cunningham Dotson made in memory of her father, Ralph Linwood Cunningham. The scholarship will help provide current DSLCC students who have completed at least one-half of their curriculum requirements with the opportunity to seek hands-on learning experiences. 3.0 GPA Required. Edward Pennell Brooks OCC Scholarship--Established in 1988 by the late E. Pennell Brooks of Bath County.  Mr. Brooks was a Vice President with Sears Roebuck and a Dean of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology School of Industrial Management, in honor of a group of long-time friends. The Caperton Book Scholarship for Non-Traditional Students--Established by William and Nancy Caperton to provide assistance for an adult residing in Alleghany County or the City of Covington who chose not to pursue post-secondary education immediately after high school graduation, but now wishes to enroll in college to gain marketable job skills, facilitate their career advancement or successfully change career paths. Requires student to have completed at least 25% of the credits needed for the certificate or associate degree program in which he/she is enrolled.  Also requires a 2.25 GPA or GED Certificate. Madge Chandler Carr Book Scholarship--Established in memory of Mrs. Carr by her husband, the late Gordon Carr and her daughter, Joyce Carr Webber. Mrs. Carr, a long-time Clifton Forge resident, was known for her dedication to helping others. Marjorie G. Carte Scholarship--Established by family, friends, and colleagues in honor and in memory of Mrs. Carte, a long-time DSLCC faculty member and division chair. Awarded to a graduating senior from the College's service area. (application) (2009-2010 Recipient) (back to list)

The Carter Scholarships--Established by a bequest from Marjorie Carter McCarthy of Covington made in memory of her sisters, Mary Lee Carter Hubbard, Raeburn Carter Stull, and Margaret Carter Helper, and herself.  Mrs. McCarthy was a native of Alleghany County, 1925 graduate of Covington High School and taught French, English and history at Millboro High School in Bath County for seven years. The scholarships are available to Alleghany, Bath, or Covington High School graduates who make DSLCC their college of choice. Requires a 3.35 GPA (application) (2009-2010 Recipients) (back to list)

Tammy Caul Carter Book Scholarship--Established by her family in memory of Tammy, who was a graduate of the DSLCC Nursing Program and a recipient of the Nursing Faculty Recognition Award. Awarded to a first or second-year DSLCC nursing student. (application) (2009-2010 Recipient) (back to list)

Central High School Lucy Gleason Memorial Scholarship--Established in honor and memory of Miss Lucy Gleason, a beloved teacher for forty-six years in the Alleghany County School System, this scholarship is awarded to a graduating senior from Alleghany High School planning to pursue a career in education at DSLCC.  (application) (2009-2010 Recipient(back to list)

George N. Chucker and Edith Raab Chucker Scholarship--Honors the memory of Dr. George Chucker, a beloved Highland's physician and long-time Educational Foundation board member and former President, and his wife, Edith Raab-Chucker.   After several years in the nursing profession, Mrs. Chucker continued her educational to become a certified nurse anesthetist.  Instrumental in establishing a school for nurse anesthetists at the former C&O and Alleghany Memorial Hospitals in Clifton Forge and Covington, Mrs. Chucker lent her expertise and support to many local organizations and causes. Raymond L. Claterbaugh, Sr. Memorial Nursing Scholarship--Established by Dr. Raymond L. Claterbaugh, Jr. in memory of his father, a dedicated Highland's physician for over 43 years, this scholarship is awarded to  student in the second year of the DSLCC nursing program who is working to complete an Associate of Applied Science in Nursing Degree at DSLCC. Dr. Claterbaugh Sr.'s enthusiasm for his work and devotion to those he served improved the quality of life for numberous individuals. (application) (2009-2010 Recipient) (back to list)

James D. Snyder Commonwealth Legacy Scholarship-Funded by the Foundation for Community College Education, this scholarship is named each year for the recipient of the 2008 Chancellor’s Award for Leadership in Philanthropy. It is awarded to a graduating senior from the DSLCC service area who has excelled academically, demonstrated a  commitment to developing leadership potential and a willingness to mentor future scholars. Elizabeth Cook Memorial Scholarships-Established by Lillian Braun of Harrisonburg, VA, in honor and memory of her sister, a long-time Alleghany County resident, to provide tuition assistance for DSLCC students who are residents of the College's service area. DSLCC Educational Foundation Board of Directors Scholarship--Established by and funded through yearly through contributions by the Dabney S. Lancaster Community College Educational Foundation Board of Directors, this scholarship is awarded to a graduating senior from the College's service area. DSLCC Honors Scholarship--A two-year scholarship providing tuition assistance to outstanding graduates from high schools in the College’s service area. It pays full tuition expenses, up to 12 credit hours, each year for two years.  Requires 3.35 GPA (application) (2009-2010 Recipient) (back to list)

Mr. & Mrs. J. L. Davis Memorial Scholarship--Established by the Rev. Addie Davis as a tribute to her parents and their commitment to family and higher education. The Davises operated a furniture store in downtown Covington for 36 years.  Awarded to a graduating senior from the College's service area. (application) (2009-2010 Recipient(back to list)

Judy M. Deeds Memorial Nursing Scholarship--Established by friends and fellow members of the Appalachian Forest Management Group in memory of Mrs. Deeds, a life-long resident of Bath County. A graduate of the DSLCC Nursing program and Radford University, Deeds spent most of her nursing career working as a registered nurse for Bath County Community Hospital. She also worked at the Stonewall Jackson Hospital in Lexington. Helen F. Dickson Scholarships--Established by a bequest from the estate of Miss Helen Dickson, a native and long-time resident of Alleghany County. She encouraged young people to continue their educations after high school, emphasizing that it would broaden their perspectives, enhance their life opportunities, and improve the quality of life for future generations. Ethel Mae Grimes Dorsey Memorial Nursing Scholarship--Established by family and friends in memory of Mrs. Dorsey, a dedicated, hardworking, and caring person who was devoted to the nursing profession, this scholarship is awarded to a first or second-year nursing student. Durvin Family Scholarship for Nurses--Established by Benjamin H. Durvin, Jr. in honor and in memory of the Durvin family of Clifton Forge who strongly believe in the great importance of the nursing profession, this scholarship is awarded to a first or second-year DSLCC nursing student. Julia Edmunds Scholarship--Established in memory of Dr. "Julie", a beloved Clifton Forge pediatrician, by her husband, Dr. Mead Edmunds and friend, Mrs. Josephine Dellinger and awarded to a first-year DSLCC nursing or a graduating senior from a service area high school who intends to pursue nursing as a career. T. Kenneth and Karin R. Ellis Scholarship--Given by Mrs. Ellis in memory of her late husband, a long-time resident of Hot Springs whose generosity and contributions to the community and individuals were always a top priority during his life. Colin P. Ferguson Honorary Scholarship--Established by Dr. John Grimes, a Clifton Forge native, to honor Mr. Ferguson, a former teacher and coach, for his guidance and commitment to young people and the importance of education. Mr. Ferguson was a teacher and coach in the Clifton Forge School System for five years and a Professor of History at DSLCC for about fifteen years. The scholarship is awarded to a graduating Alleghany High School senior who is a resident of Clifton Forge.  Requires a 2.0 GPA (application) (2009-2010 Recipient) (back to list)

Ferguson/Proffit Nursing Scholarship--Established in memory of her parents, Eunice Ferguson Proffit and Melvin F. First  Citizens Bank Small Business/Entrepreneurial Scholarship--Established in 1999 by First Citizens Bank, this scholarship provides tuition and/or book assistance to persons seeking to start a new business or are already engaged in a business and are seeking small business/entrepreneurial training. Martha P. and Clyde E. Griffith Memorial Nursing Book Scholarship--Established by their children in memory of "Grif" and "Petie" Griffith, this scholarship honors their parents' love for and dedication to their community and its citizens.  It is awarded to a first or second-year DSLCC nursing student. Hall Scholarship for Prospective Teachers--Established through a bequest from Mrs. Hall's estate and by memorial gifts from family and friends, this scholarship honors the memory of Mrs. Hall who dedicated her life to teaching the young people of the Alleghany Highlands. Barry Hillsman Forestry Scholarship--Established by Mr. & Mrs. John D. Hillsman in memory of their son who was a veteran of the U.S. Armed Forces and was a student in the Forestry program at DSLCC.(application) (2009-2010 Recipient) (back to list)

Master Trooper Jerry L. Hines Scholarship--Established by the Virginia State Police Association in memory of Jerry Hines, a Rockbridge County resident who was a 22-year veteran of the Department of State Police and was killed in the line of duty in 1989.  A cum laude graduate of the DSLCC Police Science Program and East Tennessee State University, Jerry was instrumental in the founding of the Virginia State Police Association. Martha Hudson Memorial Nursing Scholarship--Established by her son, Thomas in memory of Mrs. Hudson, who for many years worked as a nurse at Allleghany Memorial Hospital in Covington.  The Covington Junior Womans Club also contributes yearly to this scholarship.  The scholarship is awarded to a first or second-year nursing student. Dabney S. Lancaster Memorial Scholarship--Established by the family of Dr. Dabney S. Lancaster, a long-time educator who served as the Virginia State Superintendent of Public Instruction, was President of Longwood College, Chairman of the State Council of Higher Education, and for whom DSLCC is named. Lancaster Scholarship for Continuing Students--Funded from proceeds from the "Bubbles, Bands, & Brunch" fundraisers, these scholarships were established by the DSLCC Educational Foundation Board of Directors to assist students who have completed at least one full year (24 credits) at DSLCC and intend to continue studies at DSLCC as a full time student. Louise Kern Lemon Nursing Scholarship--Established by Joan Johnson, Jack Lemon, and Gretchen Zans to promote their mother's love of nursing and the nursing profession.  Mrs. Lemon was a dedicated nurse who was a graduate of the C & O Hospital.  The scholarship is awarded to a first or second-year DSLCC nursing student. Mark W. Lockhart Memorial Scholarship--Established by family and friends in memory of Mark, a graduate of Dabney S. Lancaster Community College, the University of Virginia and Piedmont Community College who worked as nurse in the Heart and Burn Units at UVA Hospital and was a member of the Palmyra Rescue Squad.  Mark was killed in an ambulance accident while on duty administering aide.  Awarded to a graduating senior from the College's service area who is pursuing a career in a medical arts field.(application) (2009-2010 Recipient) (back to list)

MGW Communications Scholarship--Ronald and Bonnie Smith, on behalf of the Board of Directors of MGW Communications, established the MGW Communications Scholarship to assist high school graduates or home-schooled students from Bath, Highland, or Augusta counties.(application)(2009-2010 Recipient) (back to list)

Marion and Cecil May Scholarship--Established by a bequest from Mr. & Mrs. May's estate to assist a graduating senior from the College's service area who intends to pursue studies at DSLCC. MeadWestvaco Scholarship--Reflecting the broadening disciplines that are represented in employment at MeadWestvaco: engineering, computer science, information technology, and biological/chemical sciences, this scholarship is awarded to a student from the College's service area who is pursuing a career in one of the above disciplines, and who demonstrates leadership potential as exhibited by involvement in extracurricular activities. Lois W. Morgan Nursing Scholarship--Established through a bequest from the estate of Lonnie H. Morgan, Jr., in honor of Mrs. Morgan's many years of dedication and devotion to the nursing profession. Mrs. Morgan was a retired nurse with 34 years of srvice with the C&O Hospital, Emmett Memorial Hospital, and Alleghany Regional Hospital. NTELOS Communications Scholarship--Given by NTELOS Communications to provide tuition assistance to a graduating senior from the company’s service area.  The student must have exhibited leadership skills through significant involvement in school and/or community activities and must be planning to enroll as a full-time student in a college transfer program at DSLCC.(application) (2009-2010 Recipient) (back to list)

Josh Patterson Forestry Scholarship--A book scholarship established by family and friends in memory of Josh, who died in 1996 after a bicycle accident. Josh's goal was to graduate from the Forestry Program at DSLCC and to work at Douthat State Park. Katherine V.H. Perret & Horace E. Perret-Gentil Scholarship--Established by a bequest from the estate of Katherine V. H. Perret. A graduate of Clifton Forge High School, she taught physics and astronomy at Randolph Macon Woman's College and at Douglass College.  It is awarded to a graduating high school senior from the College's service area who plans to attend DSLCC and who aspires to become a teacher of science or mathematics. Kay Reynolds Ray Memorial Scholarship--Established to provide financial assistance for an adult residing in the College’s service area who chose not to pursue a post-secondary education immediately after high school graduation, but now wishes to enroll in college to gain marketable job skills, facilitate their career advancement or successfully change career paths. In addition to contributions from family and friends, the scholarship is funded by proceeds from the annual Kay Ray Memorial Golf Tournament sponsored by Cliff View Golf Club. Merle Weaver Reid Scholarships--Established through a bequest from Mrs. Reid's estate, this scholarship is awarded to graduating seniors from Alleghany or Covington High Schools who make DSLCC their college of choice.  Mrs. Reid was a native and long-time resident of the Highlands who was involved in many service-oriented community organizations. Linda Rose Scholarship--Established by the DSLCC Classified Staff Standing Committee in memory of Linda Kenney Rose, a DSLCC employee whose untimely death occurred in 1995, this scholarship is awarded to DSLCC part-time students who are employed for a minimum of 20 hours per week. Betsy P. Saville Memorial Nursing Scholarship--Established by Mrs. Saville’s husband, Leon; daughter, Kathy; and by Dr. and Mrs. William J. Ellis, in memory of Mrs. Saville, a caring person who was devoted to the nursing profession. Awarded to a first or second-year DSLCC nursing student. Smith, 116 Infantry, Veterans of Foreign Wars, Post 1033 Scholarship--Established by the Veterans of Foreign Wars, Post 1033, this scholarship is awarded each year to a graduating senior from Alleghany and Covington High School who intends to pursue studies at DSLCC. Vivian N. and Robert F. Sutphin Nursing Scholarship--Created by Mr. Sutphin to honor Mrs. Sutphin for her over fifty years of service and dedication to the nursing profession, this scholarship is awarded to an adult resident of Alleghany or Bath County who chose not to pursue a post-secondary education immediately after high school graduation, but now wishes to pursue a career in nursing by completing the DSLCC Nursing Program.  It is awarded every other year and assists with tuition and book expenses for two years.(application) (2009-2010 Recipient) (back to list)

William A. & Madeline G. Stone Nursing Scholarship--Established by Mr. & Mrs. Stone's daughters to recognize their parents' many contributions to the community and to assist a first or second-year nursing student who demonstrates kindness, compassion and a dedication to the nursing profession. (application) (2009-2010 Recipient) (back to list)

TAPPI Scholarship--Established to recognize the educational efforts of the Technical Association of the Pulp and Paper Industry, this scholarship is available to service-area students pursuing an Associate of Applied Science Degree in Advanced Manufacturing and Packaging Techonology. Applicants may be either graduating seniors or have completed at least 50% of the requirements for the degree. Requires 2.75 GPA (application)  (2009-2010 Recipient) (back to list)

Stuart D. Thomas Memorial Scholarship-- Established by friends, family,and clients to honor the work and memory of Mr. Thomas, a licensed massage therapist in Covington, this scholarship is awarded to residents of Alleghany County or the City of Covington who are pursuing a certificate in the DSLCC Massage Therapy program. Mae S. & Raymond E. Tucker Memorial Nursing Scholarship--Originally created by Mr. Tucker to honor Mrs. Tucker's memory and her dedication to the nursing profession, the Tucker's daughters, continue to fund the scholarship to honor the memory of both parents. The Vaughn Family Scholarship for Non-Traditional Students--Established by the Stephen Vaughn family to provide financial assistance for an adult residing in the College's service area that chose not to pursue a post-secondary educationa immediately after high school graduation, but now wishes to enroll in college to gain marketable job skills, facilitate their career advancement or successfully change career paths. Virginia Firefighters Foundation Scholarship--Initiated by the non-profit Virginia Firefighters Foundation to provide scholarship programs at Virginia Community Colleges for the dependents of Virginia's firefighters or student firefighters.  DSLCC is proud to be among the first community colleges chosen to receive funds from this organization for this purpose.(application) (2009-2010 Recipient) (back to list)

Thomas N. Warren Scholarship--Established by his wife, Jean Warren, this scholarship honors the life and memory of Dr. Thomas N. Warren in recognition of his service as Head of Pathology at Alleghany Regional Hospital and as Chairman of the DLSCC Local Board of Directors. (application) (2009-2010 Recipient) (back to list)

Harry & Virginia Walton Memorial Scholarship--Established as a tribute to their parents by the couple's five daughters in honor of their parent's love of education and the Alleghany Highlands, this scholarship is awarded to a student enrolled in either the DSLCC Nursing program or in one of the physical sciences. Renowned for his commitment to Alleghany County through his service on the Alleghany County Board of Supervisors, School Board, the DSLCC Local Board, and the Fifth Planning District, Mr. Walton also was the recipient of the Medallion of Merit Award presented by DSLCC to local citizens who have made significant contributions to the betterment of life in a community served by the College. L. Paul Wiggins Memorial Scholarship--Established by Mr. Tom Wiggins, a retired guidance counselor at DSLCC, and his wife in memory of their son who died in a boating accident near Anchorage, Alaska in July 198 this scholarship is awarded to a graduating senior from the College's service. Lydia M. Woods Memorial Nursing Scholarship--Established by Mrs. Woods' sons to honor her long career in the nursing profession, this scholarship is awarded to a first or second-year DSLCC nursing student.  Mrs. Woods graduated from the C & O Hospital School of Nursing in 1920 and was employed by that hospital until her retirement. Jesse A. Wright Memorial Scholarship--Established by Mr. Wright’s wife, son and daughter-in-law,Calvin and Anne Wright, and by his nephew, Dr. Courtney Persinger of Cincinnati, in memory of Mr. Wright, a native of Alleghany County who grew up on Potts Creek and founded Covington Motor Corporation.  It is awarded to a graduating senior from Alleghany or Covington High School.
